Coca i Fitó Maragda is a Montsant red from Garnacha with Cariñena and Syrah, made by the Coca brothers. Aged 12 months in French and American oak, it shows floral lift, ripe red and black fruit and a balance of freshness and concentration.
Description
Coca i Fitó was founded in 2006 by the brothers Toni and Miquel Coca with the aim of bottling the character of D.O. Montsant. Maragda is led by Garnacha with Cariñena and Syrah grown on the region's slate and clay soils. Garnacha thrives in this warm, dry Mediterranean setting, ripening to high sugars and giving the wine its generous, fruit-driven core, while altitude and the wide diurnal range keep acidity intact. The wine ages 12 months in a mix of French and American oak, the American barrels lending a sweeter, more open spice and the French a tighter grain, and the slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins. The colour is deep. The nose opens with floral notes of rose over tart red and black fruit, with sweet spice from the barrel. The palate is full and ripe, generous in fruit but framed by fresh acidity and fine tannin, the Syrah adding a peppery, darker edge. The finish is long and savoury. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant for half an hour. It pairs well with roast and grilled meats.
