Description
A Clynelish of a 25 year old chosen by the bottler That Boutique-y Whisky Company, bottled at 47.1%, one of 386 bottles. Clynelish is a coastal Highland distillery at Brora in Sutherland, famous for its waxy single malt. The original Clynelish was founded in 1819 by the Marquess of Stafford during the Highland Clearances.
It was run through copper stills on Clynemilton Burn water, for a maritime spirit with a beeswax richness. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding a light honeyed vanilla. In the oxidative, evaporative years concentration brings tropical esters of mango and pineapple over a deep, beeswax richness. The wax sits at the heart of the spirit, the cask building fruit and honey around it. The clean, oily spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and honey over the wax. A coastal maturation lends a faint brine to the oily, waxy malt. Years in oak round the spirit, the citrus deepening to orange and tropical fruit.
At a full 47.1% it is bold yet waxy. An oily wax with citrus and brine, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The texture is thick and oily, the wax coating the palate. The close is long, wax over a citrus lift. This is Clynelish's oily, coastal Highland style.
