Description
The bottler Scotch Single Malt Circle bottled this Clynelish, a 9 year old, distilled in 1990, from cask 3210, bottled at 57.4%. Clynelish is a Highland single malt of waxy, coastal character from Brora in Sutherland. Two old Brora warehouses still stand on the site, a link to its silent neighbour.
Distilled for the waxy, oily spirit Clynelish is known for, for the famous waxy texture at its heart. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla over the oily spirit. At an extractive age eugenol lends a clove note and lactones a coconut, the wax and citrus fresh and lively. Refill oak lets the famous Clynelish wax lead, lemon and honey beneath. The lost Brora distillery beside it, closed in 1983, was revived by Diageo in 2021. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the waxy, citrussy core over the years. The original Clynelish was founded in 1819 by the Marquess of Stafford during the Highland Clearances.
Bottled at a cask strength 57.4%, it is rich. A thick wax over orchard fruit and citrus, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run candle wax, lemon and a coastal salt. A long, waxy finish carries an orange sweetness. This is a waxy, citrussy Highland single malt.
