Clynelish 34 Years Old 1971 M&H Cask Selection (Taste Still)

A 34 year old Clynelish from the bottler Taste Still, distilled in 1971, bottled at 45.7%, one of 228 bottles. Clynelish is a waxy, citrussy Highland single malt from the village of Brora. Most of its make goes to blending, with a fourteen year old the flagship single malt.

Drawn off three wash and three spirit stills, giving the oily, candle wax character Clynelish is prized for. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla over the oily spirit. At a great, fragile age oxidation rules, sotolon lending maple and old oak as beeswax and a coastal salt linger. Clynelish wax and a maritime salt run through the maturing spirit. The distillery was built in 1967 next to the original Clynelish of 1819, which was renamed Brora and later closed. Clynelish sits on the North Sea coast at Brora, in the far north east of the Highlands. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the waxy, citrussy core over the years.

Bottled at a cask strength 45.7%, it is rich. Candle wax, tangerine and a maritime lift, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The texture is thick and oily, the wax coating the palate. Citrus, wax and a faint brine see out the finish. This is the cult waxy malt of Brora.
