Description
This Clynelish was bottled by the bottler Daily Dram, a 32 year old, distilled in 1990, bottled at 49.3%. Clynelish is a Highland single malt of waxy, coastal character from Brora in Sutherland. Clynelish sits on the North Sea coast at Brora, in the far north east of the Highlands.
The spirit was worked through the tall stills for a citrussy, oily spirit, to build a waxy, coastal, citrussy spirit. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding a light honeyed vanilla. In its ethereal years the malt is profoundly waxy and oxidative, faded esters and a touch of sotolon (maple, spice). The clean, oily spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and honey over the wax. The lost Brora distillery beside it, closed in 1983, was revived by Diageo in 2021. A coastal maturation lends a faint brine to the waxy, oily spirit. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the wax.
Bottled at a cask strength 49.3%, it is rich. Beeswax, honey and a coastal freshness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The texture is thick and oily, the wax coating the palate. The finish is deep, waxy and maritime. This is the famously waxy Highland malt of Clynelish.
