Description
A 24 year old Clynelish from the Pitlochry bottler Signatory Vintage, distilled in 1995, from cask 11234, bottled at 52.2%, one of 556 bottles. Clynelish is a waxy, citrussy Highland single malt from the village of Brora. The lost Brora distillery beside it, closed in 1983, was revived by Diageo in 2021.
Run through copper stills on Clynemilton Burn water, for a maritime spirit with a beeswax richness. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut over the wax. At this evaporative stage ellagitannins lend a drying structure while oxidation builds waxy tropical fruit. A coastal maturation lends a faint brine to the oily, waxy malt. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the wax. Clynelish wax and a maritime salt run through the maturing spirit. The cool, salt laden coastal air works into the maturing casks at Brora.
At its natural 52.2% it is concentrated. A thick wax over orchard fruit and citrus, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. The texture is thick and oily, the wax coating the palate. The finish runs waxy, coastal and clean. This is a coastal Highland single malt of rare texture.
