Description
From the bottler Daily Dram, a 22 year old Clynelish, distilled in 1995, bottled at 56.7%. Clynelish is a coastal Highland distillery at Brora in Sutherland, famous for its waxy single malt. The famous wax is said to come from the build up in the distillery's feints receivers.
Distilled from unpeated malt in the distillery's tall stills, for a maritime spirit with a beeswax richness. A sherry cask wrapped the waxy spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. At this evaporative stage ellagitannins lend a drying structure while oxidation builds waxy tropical fruit. The cool, salt laden coastal air works into the maturing casks at Brora. The lost Brora distillery beside it, closed in 1983, was revived by Diageo in 2021. The unpeated make leans on texture and citrus, the cask adding depth. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the waxy, citrussy core over the years.
Bottled at a cask strength 56.7%, it is rich. Waxy honey, lemon and a savoury edge, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. A beeswax and a savoury edge give it depth. The close is long, wax over a citrus lift. This is the famously waxy Highland malt of Clynelish.
