Description
The bottler Silver Seal bottled this Clynelish, a 22 year old, distilled in 1993, from cask 7562, bottled at 51.7%, one of 259 bottles. Clynelish stands on the North Sea coast at Brora, the modern neighbour of the lost Brora distillery. Most of its make goes to blending, with a fourteen year old the flagship single malt.
It was made in copper stills for a coastal, waxy make, for an oily, lemony make with a savoury edge. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, vanilla and honey behind the wax. In the oxidative, evaporative years concentration brings tropical esters of mango and pineapple over a deep, beeswax richness. Long ageing turns the fresh lemon towards candied orange, beeswax and tropical fruit. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the waxy, citrussy core over the years. Refill oak lets the famous Clynelish wax lead, lemon and honey beneath.
At a hearty 51.7% it carries real weight. Candle wax, lemon and a coastal salt, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The texture is thick and oily, the wax coating the palate. A long, oily finish ends on lemon and beeswax. This is the cult waxy malt of Brora.
