Description
This Clynelish was bottled by the London merchant Berry Bros and Rudd, a 15 year old, distilled in 1997, from cask 6470, bottled at 46%. Clynelish is a Highland single malt of waxy, coastal character from Brora in Sutherland. Water comes from the Clynemilton Burn, the spirit drawn off three wash and three spirit stills.
The spirit was worked through the tall stills for a citrussy, oily spirit, for an oily, lemony make with a savoury edge. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanilla beneath the oily, coastal spirit. At oxidative maturity aldehydes and esters lend tropical fruit while ellagitannins add a drying grip to the waxy malt. The cool, salt laden coastal air works into the maturing casks at Brora. The distillery was built in 1967 next to the original Clynelish of 1819, which was renamed Brora and later closed. The waxy, oily spirit takes cask flavour well while keeping its citrus and coast.
Reduced to 46%, it is supple. Candle wax, lemon and a coastal salt, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A lemon, a brine and a thick wax lift it. It finishes oily, waxy and bright. This is a waxy, citrussy Highland single malt.
