Description
Scotland's oldest independent bottler Cadenhead's selected this Clynelish, a 14 year old, distilled in 1990, bottled at 57.1%, one of 204 bottles. Clynelish is a waxy, citrussy Highland single malt from the village of Brora. Two old Brora warehouses still stand on the site, a link to its silent neighbour.
Distilled for the waxy, oily spirit Clynelish is known for, to build a waxy, coastal, citrussy spirit. A refill bourbon hogshead held it, keeping the waxy character to the fore. By the integrating teens congeners fade and esters build, the waxy, oily spirit growing rounder. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the waxy, citrussy core over the years. It is the heart malt of Johnnie Walker Gold Label, and a sought after single malt in its own right. A coastal maturation lends a faint brine to the oily, waxy malt. The distillery was built in 1967 next to the original Clynelish of 1819, which was renamed Brora and later closed.
At its natural 57.1% it is concentrated. Beeswax, honey and a coastal freshness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A beeswax and a savoury edge give it depth. The finish is deep, waxy and maritime. This is a coastal Highland single malt of rare texture.
