Description
From the bottler Scotch Malt Whisky Society, a 12 year old Clynelish, distilled in 2010, from cask 26.216, bottled at 58.7%, one of 215 bottles. Clynelish is a waxy, citrussy Highland single malt from the village of Brora. The distillery was built in 1967 next to the original Clynelish of 1819, which was renamed Brora and later closed.
The spirit was drawn off three wash and three spirit stills, to build a waxy, coastal, citrussy spirit. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla over the oily spirit. By the integrating teens congeners fade and esters build, the waxy, oily spirit growing rounder. The wax sits at the heart of the spirit, the cask building fruit and honey around it. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the wax. It is the heart malt of Johnnie Walker Gold Label, and a sought after single malt in its own right.
At a natural 58.7% it is full and oily. Candle wax, tangerine and a maritime lift, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A beeswax and a savoury edge give it depth. The finish runs waxy, coastal and clean. This is a coastal Highland single malt of rare texture.
