Description
Compass Box bottled this Clynelish, a 10 year old, distilled in 2015, bottled at 50%, one of 1278 bottles. Clynelish, built in 1967 beside the old Brora distillery, is known for its signature waxy texture. Clynelish sits on the North Sea coast at Brora, in the far north east of the Highlands.
Distilled from unpeated malt in the distillery's tall stills, to build a waxy, coastal, citrussy spirit. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla over the oily spirit. In integration lactones (coconut) and vanillin (vanilla) knit with the wax, lemon deepening to candied orange. Years in oak round the spirit, the citrus deepening to orange and tropical fruit. It is the heart malt of Johnnie Walker Gold Label, and a sought after single malt in its own right. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the wax. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the waxy, citrussy core over the years.
At its natural 50% it is concentrated. The famous wax over lemon and orange, with a soft vanilla from the oak. It is waxy and citrussy, the oily spirit shining through. The finish runs waxy, coastal and clean. This is the waxy heart of Johnnie Walker Gold.
