Description
Clos Mogador is one of the founding estates of modern Priorat, the rugged inland Catalan appellation where Rene Barbier helped lead its revival. This Gratallops Vi de Vila rosat is made from Garnacha, Carinena and Macabeo grown on the region's signature llicorella, the broken black and red slate that gives Priorat wines their depth. Llicorella forces the vines to root deep through the rock in search of water, giving low yields, concentrated fruit and a distinct mineral character, while the steep slopes and hot dry climate are tempered by altitude and cool nights. This is built as a serious rosado rather than a light summer wine. It spends twelve months in large wood vats of 80 to 220 hectolitres, where the size of the vessel limits oak flavour and allows slow oxygen exchange to build texture, followed by six months in stainless steel to settle and freshen. Expect a pale to medium colour and a refined nose of red berries, cherry and white peach with citrus, dried herbs and a stony mineral lift. The palate is dry, structured and textured, with the slate showing as a saline mineral cut on a long finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass.
