Clos Mesorah is a kosher Montsant red from Elvi Wines, blending Cariñena, Garnacha and Syrah from old hillside vines. Fourteen months in French oak give a deep, structured wine of dark plum, black cherry, liquorice and firm, savoury tannin.
Description
Clos Mesorah is the Montsant red from Elvi Wines, a leading producer of kosher wine made under Kashrut law across several Spanish appellations. The wine is a blend of Cariñena, Garnacha Tinta and Syrah grown on the steep, schist and clay hillsides typical of Montsant, the zone that rings Priorat in southern Catalonia. These poor, well-drained slopes and the dry Mediterranean climate, cooled at night by the surrounding sierras, keep yields low and ripen the fruit slowly, building concentration and firm structure. Old Cariñena and Garnacha vines drive the colour and dark fruit, with Syrah adding pepper and depth. Fermentation on skins extracts the dense phenolics that give the wine its grip, and it then ages fourteen months in French oak, where measured oxygen exchange resolves the tannins and layers in spice, cedar and a savoury edge. The 2022 is deep, near opaque ruby. The nose offers ripe plum, black cherry and liquorice over leather, black pepper and warm earth. The palate is full and structured at fourteen and a half percent, with firm but ripe tannin and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18C and decant an hour ahead. It suits roast and grilled red meat.
