Description
Clos Martinet is made by Mas Martinet in the D.O.Q. Priorat, one of the estates that led the region's revival in the 1980s under Josep Lluís Pérez, when Priorat was still known mostly for bulk wine. The blend draws on Garnacha and Cariñena with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, farmed organically on the region's steep llicorella slate, the soil that gives Priorat reds their mineral depth and pushes vines to root deep for water. Ageing takes place over twenty-two months in concrete vats rather than oak barrels, a choice that allows gentle micro-oxygenation and the softening of tannins without adding wood flavour or vanilla, keeping the fruit fresh and the mineral character clear. The relatively restrained 13.5 percent alcohol reflects that focus on balance and elegance over power. The result is a smooth, refined red with fresh cherry and raspberry, plum, floral and earthy notes and a savoury, mineral finish. The palate is medium to full, the tannins fine-grained and polished. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees after a short decant. It suits roast lamb, beef and earthy mushroom dishes.
