Description
Clos Martina is a white from D.O.Q. Priorat, made by the small Mas d'en Blei winery in La Morera de Montsant from Garnacha Blanca, Pedro Ximenez and Xarel-lo. The estate sits on the banks of the Siurana river, with seventeen hectares of vineyards around an old farmhouse dating from 1756. Priorat is defined by its llicorella, a slate soil that forces the roots deep for water and gives the wines a distinctive stony minerality. The warm Mediterranean climate is tempered by altitude and cool nights, which keeps acidity in the ripe fruit. The three grapes bring weight, orchard fruit and freshness in turn. After fermentation the wine is aged for six months in French oak, a stage that through slow oxygen exchange and lees contact adds texture and a light nutty spice while keeping the fruit and minerality to the fore. Expect a pale gold colour and a nose of white peach, citrus and white flowers with a light almond note. The palate is dry and textured, medium to full bodied, with stone fruit, a saline mineral streak and a long, stony finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
