Description
Clos Lojen is made by Bodega y Viñedos Ponce in D.O. Manchuela, in Castilla La Mancha. The wine is built on Bobal, a local variety from vines over 30 years old grown on clay and limestone soils. Manchuela sits at altitude inland, and the cool nights that follow warm days preserve the bright acidity that defines this style. The fermentation is spurred by the vineyard's own native yeasts, which give the wine a more particular, savoury character than cultured strains. It then ages seven months in French oak barrels, a short, light touch that frames the fruit without masking it and softens the tannin through gentle oxygen exchange. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose shows ripe strawberry and cherry with a hint of subtle spice and dried herbs. The palate is lively and juicy, with a vibrant freshness, moderate tannin and a clean mineral line from the calcareous soils. The finish is bright and savoury. The wine can be enjoyed now or kept for a few years. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, lightly cool. It suits roast chicken, charcuterie and mushroom dishes.
