Clos i Terrasses makes Laurel Blanc in D.O.Q. Priorat, from Garnacha Blanca, Chenin Blanc and Viognier on steep licorella slate. Farmed biodynamically and aged seven months in amphorae and barrels, it is a ripe, textured white of stone fruit, white flowers and a mineral core.
Description
Laurel Blanc is a white from Clos i Terrasses, the Priorat estate founded by Daphne Glorian during the region's 1990s revival, working the steep terraces of D.O.Q. Priorat in Catalonia. It blends Garnacha Blanca, Chenin Blanc and Viognier grown on licorella, the region's fractured slate and quartz soils that force vine roots deep in search of water and give Priorat wines their signature mineral drive. The climate is hot and dry, but the poor soils and old vines keep yields low and concentration high, while cooler nights hold the acidity in balance. Farming is biodynamic, organic and natural in the cellar, with spontaneous fermentation. The wine ages seven months in a mix of clay amphorae and oak barrels: the amphorae allow slow oxygen exchange and add texture without wood flavour, while the barrels lend a subtle frame, and time on the lees builds a rounded, savoury palate. It is pale lemon in colour, with white peach, apricot and white flowers on the nose over a stony, earthy base. The palate is dry, ripe and full at 14 per cent, with honeyed fruit, a waxy weight and a long mineral finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees with white fish, poultry or roasted vegetables.
