Stephane Vedeau makes this organic Cotes du Rhone from Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah at Clos Bellane, high in the Rhone hills. A year in oak gives a dark, peppery red of black fruit, liquorice and garrigue herbs.
Description
Clos Bellane sits at altitude in the eastern Rhone, where Stephane Vedeau farms organically across several Rhone estates. This red is the classic southern Rhone blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah, grown on the cooler, higher slopes of the appellation where limestone and clay soils and a long growing season give ripe fruit while holding freshness. The altitude and wide day-to-night temperature range slow ripening and preserve acidity and aromatic detail, which keeps a wine of this power balanced. Grenache brings ripe red and black fruit and body, Syrah adds colour, pepper and structure, and Mourvedre contributes tannin and a savoury, gamey depth. Ageing of around twelve months in oak rounds the tannin and folds in spice and a light smoky tone through slow oxygen exchange. The wine is deep ruby, with a nose of blackberry, plum and cherry over black pepper, liquorice and the dried garrigue herbs of the region. The palate is full and warming, with firm tannin and a savoury, peppery finish. Serve at 17C with grilled and roast meats, or with hard mountain cheese.
