Description
Clio 2023 is a red from D.O. Jumilla in Murcia, made by Bodegas El Nido within Juan Gil's Gil Family Estates. It blends Monastrell with Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards around the winery. The Monastrell comes from a 32-hectare plot of old vines that crop sparingly but yield grapes of real concentration, grown on predominantly limestone soil. Jumilla's hot, dry continental climate and these low-yielding old vines drive deep ripeness and the 15 per cent alcohol, while the limestone retains what little moisture there is and lends freshness and grip to balance the power. Monastrell brings dense black fruit, structure and a savoury, herbal edge, and Cabernet Sauvignon adds backbone, cassis and firm tannin. The wine ages twenty-three months in French and American oak, a long spell that supplies vanilla, toast and sweet spice and lets slow oxygen exchange through the wood polish the considerable tannin. It is deep and intense, with very ripe black fruit close to compote, dark chocolate and cocoa, liquorice, pepper and dried herbs over oak. The tannins are full and the finish long and warming. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanting ahead, with grilled red meat.
