Claus Preisinger makes this fresh, natural Zweigelt in Burgenland, Austria, on stony Kieselstein soils. Eight months in barrel give a vivid, light red of juicy plum, forest berries and a peppery savoury edge.
Description
Claus Preisinger is a leading natural-wine producer in Burgenland, in the Weinland of eastern Austria, near the warming Neusiedlersee lake. Kieselstein takes its name from the stony soils it grows on, which drain freely and warm quickly, helping Zweigelt, Austria's bright native red grape, ripen evenly while the lake-tempered climate keeps the wine fresh at a moderate 12.5% alcohol. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically and the wine is made naturally, with minimal intervention and little or no added sulphur. It spends eight months in barrel, where gentle oxygen exchange rounds the tannins while leaving the vivid fruit and freshness intact. The wine is bright, light ruby. The nose shows juicy plum, cherry and forest berries with black pepper, dried herbs and a faint smoky, earthy note. The palate is light and lively, with crunchy red and dark fruit, soft tannins and a savoury, peppery finish. Serve cool, at 14 to 16 degrees. It pairs well with pork, roast poultry and mushroom dishes.
