Claus Preisinger makes this Kalkstein Blaufränkisch in Gols, Burgenland, farming organically and biodynamically. As the name says, the fruit grows on limestone, and 6 months in oak give a fresh, fragrant red of cherry, plum and black pepper at just 12.5 percent.
Description
Kalkstein Blaufränkisch is a natural, organic and biodynamic red from Claus Preisinger, made in Gols beside Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. Preisinger made his first wine at 20 and has grown the family holding from 3 to 19 hectares, and was an early adopter of skin-contact fermentation in Georgian amphorae. Kalkstein means limestone, and the name marks the soil this wine grows on. Limestone holds water and reflects in the glass as freshness and a fine, savoury line, while Burgenland's continental climate beside the shallow lake gives warm days and cool nights that keep the fruit bright. Blaufränkisch is a peppery, high-acid variety, and at just 12.5 percent this is a fresh, light-framed style. Six months in oak shape the tannin without adding heavy spice. The colour is bright ruby. The nose is fragrant, with cherry, plum and red berries over black pepper, a smoky note and dried herbs. The palate is light to medium, with crisp acidity, fine tannin and a clean, mineral finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled if you like. Good with roast pork, poultry and game birds.
