A twelve year old Clarendon MMW single cask from 1423 S.B.S at nearly 65%, dry and high ester yet surprisingly smooth, tropical fruit and glue giving way to vanilla, roasted coffee and a chili spiced, mango edged finish.
Description
Denmark's 1423 bottled this Clarendon MMW under its Single Barrel Selection, a detail obsessed, transparent line of cask strength, unsweetened single casks. From the 2010 vintage at a hefty 64.7%, twelve years old, it is the kind of dry, powerful Jamaican that nonetheless drinks more smoothly than its proof suggests, suiting drinkers who want big flavour without harshness.
Molasses fermentation and double retort pot distillation give the MMW its high ester, gluey nose alongside tropical fruit and a herbal note. The palate turns to tropical fruit, vanilla, spice and roasted coffee, and the finish carries young wood, mango, ester and a distinctive chili heat. The alcohol is impressively well integrated for nearly 65%, letting the fruit lead. Dry, concentrated and long, it shows Clarendon at high strength while keeping things composed, a rewarding pour for experienced palates.
