An Old Tom with real intrigue: candied lemon peel and bittersweet sugar play against cardamom, almond, star anise and a flicker of coffee and vanilla. Citadelle distils it at Cognac, in Charentais pot stills that double as brandy stills out of season. Floral, spicy and softly sweetened, it carries 19 botanicals with grace and a long, woody finish.

Description
Citadelle traces its story to 1775 and a royal licence to distil gin in the old citadel of Dunkirk, a recipe Alexandre Gabriel revived two centuries on. Picardy wheat and wild juniper join a long list of nineteen hand-picked botanicals, among them genepi, almonds, grains of paradise, cardamom, cubeb, star anise, violet and yuzu. It's distilled at the Logis d'Angeac in Charentais pot stills, the very ones used for cognac from November to March, triple-distilled then run a fourth time with the aromatic macerate.
The nose is strong and fresh, juniper and orange peel over cardamom, jasmine and honeysuckle, with hints of coffee and vanilla. The palate is full-bodied and bittersweet, candied lemon peel, aniseed and almond carrying nutmeg, cinnamon and cubeb, into a long finish of violet, angelica, liquorice and grains of paradise. Stir it into a richer, rounder Martinez.
