Ciacci Piccolomini makes Pianrosso from Sangiovese grown on its estate in Montalcino, Tuscany. Aged in wood, it is a structured red with blackberry, black plum, violet and an earthy, savoury depth.
Description
Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona is a long-established estate in Montalcino, in southern Tuscany, where Pianrosso is made from Sangiovese. Montalcino is warmer and drier than the rest of Chianti, and its galestro and clay soils drain freely, stressing the vines and concentrating the fruit while feeding Sangiovese's firm tannin and bright acidity. The estate's elevation gives cool nights that preserve aromatics and freshness through the long, warm ripening. The wine is aged in wood, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds cedar and savoury depth, knitting the structure together while keeping the fruit clear. The colour is a deep ruby. The nose is enveloping, with blackberry, black plum and red berries over violet, dried herbs, leather and an earthy undertone. The palate is full and structured, the firm tannin and high acidity giving energy and length, finishing dry, savoury and long. The estate's traditional approach balances modern cellar work against the classic character of the zone. Serve at 17 to 18C, decanting an hour ahead; it suits roast and braised red meats and aged cheese.
