Description
Cask number 3291 from Chichibu distillery in Saitama was distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2016 at 5 years old, part of the distillery's explorations with non-traditional cask combinations during its early years. The release was directed to the Japanese domestic market by Venture Whisky, the house founded by Ichiro Akuto.
The maturation combined an Ex-Bourbon barrel and a Stout barrel, an unusual pairing that contrasts the clean vanilla and coconut of American oak with the roasted grain, dark chocolate and earthy notes typically contributed by beer-seasoned wood. Chichibu's typically vibrant and fruity new make sits between these two influences, picking up sweetness from the bourbon cask and body from the stout barrel. At 57.4%, it is bottled cask strength, showing the combination clearly without dilution.
