Chichibu in Saitama, the craft flagship of Venture Whisky and founder Ichiro Akuto, released this single cask bottling for The Highlander Inn in Scotland, a venue long associated with independent Japanese whisky. Distilled in 2010 and bottled in 2018 at 8 years old, the release sits under the Ichiro's Malt banner that Akuto carries across his single cask programme.
Maturation ran across Ex-Bourbon and Oloroso casks, a pairing that threads vanilla and soft wood sweetness with dried fruit, fig and orange peel. The flavour profile notes fresh fruit, honey and citrus on the lighter side, then dried fruit and a sherried warmth on the deeper register. At 59.7% cask strength, the liquid is bold enough to carry both registers without either overwhelming the other, which is characteristic of Chichibu's fruit-forward, well-balanced house style.
