Chichibu Ichiro's Malt Newborn New Hogshead 2008 is a new make spirit, not a matured whisky, distilled and bottled in 2008 at Venture Whisky's newly opened Chichibu distillery in Saitama. Released for the German market as a single-cask expression, it documents the character of Chichibu's inaugural distillate at the point of distillation, before any meaningful maturation in wood could transform it.
New make of this kind is primarily a collector's document and a technical statement: the Ex-Bourbon hogshead from which it was drawn contributed almost nothing to the spirit at this stage, making the bottling a direct portrait of Chichibu's raw distillate character. The vibrant, clean, fruit-forward spirit captured here would go on to mature into one of Japan's most sought-after single malts, and for students of the distillery's development it is a rare reference point from the very beginning.
