Chichibu distillery in Saitama, founded in 2008 by Ichiro Akuto, maintains an active relationship with La Maison du Whisky in Paris, regularly supplying individually selected single casks for the French and European markets. Cask 3812, a 2014 vintage, was bottled in 2022 for an event release at the maximum natural strength of the cask, 64.3%, the highest bottling ABV in this particular batch.
Eight years in an Ex-Bourbon barrel followed the standard Chichibu programme, drawing vanilla, orchard and tropical fruit, and a soft cereal backbone from the American oak seasoning. At 64.3%, the delivery is dense, warming and intense, requiring either a small drop of water or patience as it opens in the glass. The finish is long, with fruit and vanilla sustaining through the substantial ABV and a clean, lightly drying wood note marking the close.
