Description
Chichibu distillery in Saitama runs a diverse cask programme that extends well beyond the standard Ex-Bourbon and sherry choices, including virgin oak maturation that puts American wood character front and centre from day one. Cask 2917, a 2013 vintage selected by La Maison du Whisky for France, spent eight years in new American oak, a combination that extracts tannin, vanillin and structural wood compounds at a faster rate than seasoned barrels.
The flavour profile carries that distinctive virgin-oak signature: fragrant wood, dry hay, leafy green notes and a husky, grainy quality alongside coal-gas that is typical of spirit in close contact with fresh wood. At 63.9% cask strength, the bottling is one of the most concentrated in the batch, and the high ABV amplifies the wood's assertiveness alongside the distillery's underlying fruit-forward new make. The finish is long and drying, with the new oak tannin persisting through to the end.
