Description
Cask number 6959 is a 2016 vintage Chichibu single malt drawn from an Oloroso sherry cask, selected by La Maison du Whisky and bottled in 2023 at 63.1% for the French market. Chichibu distillery in Saitama prefecture is Venture Whisky's craft flagship, founded in 2008 by Ichiro Akuto, and the LMDW single cask series is one of the distillery's most prominent international partnerships.
Seven years in an Oloroso sherry cask gives dried dark fruit, dark chocolate and warming spice, and the noted coal-gas character adds a distinctive mineral and sulphurous undercurrent that contrasts with the sherry's sweetness in an interesting way. Chichibu's fruit-forward new make provides brightness beneath the sherry-driven depth, and the interplay between the heavier cask influence and the distillery's naturally clean spirit makes for a layered and slightly unconventional profile. At 63.1% it is full and intense.
