Description
Chichibu distillery in Saitama is run by Ichiro Akuto under the Venture Whisky company, and its collaboration with specialist retailers such as The Whisky Exchange has produced a long series of individually selected single casks. This 2013 vintage, cask 2661, was chosen by The Whisky Exchange for an event release, bottled at full cask strength after seven years of Ex-Bourbon maturation.
Seven years in American oak is sufficient to give the Chichibu new make significant structure without obscuring its essential fruit-forward brightness. Vanilla, soft caramel and a light wood frame from the bourbon barrel meet the distillery's characteristic fresh fruit and barley sweetness, producing an integrated and well-proportioned cask-strength dram. At 62.1%, the spirit retains the vivid, precise quality that has made Chichibu single casks among the most sought-after in modern Japanese whisky.
