Château Troplong Mondot is a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate on the highest hill of Saint-Émilion. This Merlot-led blend is powerful and structured, with dark plum, black cherry, cocoa and tobacco from thirty months in oak.
Description
Château Troplong Mondot sits on the highest point of the Saint-Émilion plateau in Bordeaux, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé. The hilltop vineyard is built on a cap of asteriated limestone over clay, which holds water in dry years and gives the wine its freshness and density. The estate is planted mainly to Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc filling out the blend and adding structure and aromatic lift. The maritime climate and the elevation slow ripening and protect acidity, while the limestone subsoil drives a firm tannic backbone. After fermentation the wine ages for around thirty months in oak barrels, where long, slow oxygen exchange softens and integrates the tannins and adds notes of cocoa, cedar and spice. The colour is a deep, dense purple. The nose shows ripe plum, black cherry, dark chocolate, tobacco and liquorice. The palate is full bodied and powerful, with ripe, structured tannins, concentrated dark fruit and a long, savoury finish. This is a wine to cellar, but it can be enjoyed young if decanted for a couple of hours. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees with red meat.
