Description
Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is a Grand Cru Classé white from the AOC Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux, a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Semillon. The fruit comes from plots on deep Günzian gravel, the free draining soil that defines the best of the Graves and holds warmth around the roots, off vines of around forty years. The harvest is done by hand and the wine is both fermented and aged in barrel, spending twelve months in French oak. Fermentation in wood, rather than steel, integrates the oak from the start and gives a seamless texture, while ageing on the lees adds weight and a fine, creamy mouthfeel. Sauvignon Gris and Semillon broaden the aromatic Sauvignon Blanc with stone fruit and a waxy richness. The wine is bright gold. The nose is complex, with white peach, citrus peel and white flowers over vanilla, beeswax and toast. The palate is full and layered, the oak and lees carrying almond and a long, savoury finish held by fresh acidity. Serve it at 11 to 13 degrees in a large glass.

Additional information
The weight and texture match lobster, langoustine and grilled turbot. It also handles roast chicken and richer fish such as monkfish. Aged, nutty cheeses make a good match for its oak.
