Description
Château Siran lies in the Margaux appellation of the Médoc in Bordeaux, run by Edouard Miailhe, the fifth generation of his family at the property. The wine is a classic left-bank blend of Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Margaux is built on deep gravel banks left by the Gironde, which drain freely, warm quickly and push the vine roots down for steady ripening, giving wines their characteristic perfume and fine tannin. The maritime climate is moderated by the estuary, which buffers frost and heat alike. The wine spends 12 months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood firms the tannin structure and adds cedar and a touch of spice. The colour is deep, concentrated ruby. The nose shows ripe black fruit with liquorice and the pencil-shaving, graphite note typical of fine Médoc. The palate is fruity, succulent and elegant, medium to full bodied, with fine-grained tannin and a savoury, earthy finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, and decant an hour or two ahead for a young vintage. It is a natural match for roast and grilled lamb.
