Description
Château Palmer lies in the Cantenac commune of Margaux, working more than 50 hectares on the gravel rises above the Garonne. The estate is farmed organically, and the gravel terroir is central to its style: free-draining stones reflect and retain warmth, ripening Cabernet Sauvignon fully, while the lean soils restrict vigour and drive concentration into the fruit. Margaux is known for a higher proportion of Merlot than the northern Médoc, and that grape rounds the structure of the Cabernet with plush dark fruit, with Petit Verdot adding colour and a peppery lift. The wine is aged for twenty-four months in 225-litre French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the staves softens the tannins and contributes cedar, fine spice and a savoury depth. The colour is deep and concentrated. The nose shows ripe blackberry, juicy plum and a thread of blackcurrant, with tobacco, earth and violet behind. The palate is full but composed, the tannins firm and finely textured, leading to a long, savoury finish. This is a wine to cellar. Serve at 17 degrees, decanted ahead, with roast beef, lamb or game.
