Description
Château Montrose was founded in 1815 and classified as a Second Growth in 1855, the top tier for Saint-Estèphe in the Médoc. The estate is run today by the Bouygues brothers. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the structured northern Médoc style. Montrose lies on a gravel rise close to the Gironde estuary, and the deep gravel over clay subsoil drains well and reflects warmth, helping Cabernet Sauvignon ripen fully while the clay holds water through dry spells. The river moderates temperature and reduces frost risk, giving a long ripening season that builds firm tannins and dark fruit. The wine is aged for 18 months in 225 litre French oak barrels, where measured oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds cedar, tobacco and dark chocolate. The wine is deep ruby to violet. The nose shows blackberry, plum and red currant over tobacco, earth and oak spice. On the palate it is full bodied and firmly structured, the tannins dense and ageworthy, the finish long and savoury. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted well ahead, with roast or grilled red meat.
