From the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, this classed growth blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot off gravel soils. Sixteen months in French oak frame a fresh, structured red of red currant, dark cherry, cedar and fine tannin.
Description
Chateau Malescot Saint-Exupery sits in Margaux, on the left bank of Bordeaux. The blend leads on Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a little Petit Verdot. Margaux is built on deep beds of gravel over clay and limestone, free draining soils that force the vine roots down and warm quickly, helping Cabernet ripen fully while the underlying clay keeps the fruit fresh. The maritime climate brings a long, even growing season that favours aromatic finesse over weight. The wine ages 16 months in French oak barrels, where gentle oxygen exchange knits the tannin and adds cedar, cocoa and toast. The colour is deep ruby. The nose is expressive and fresh, with red currant, dark cherry, tobacco leaf, graphite and a woody, toasted edge that builds with air. The palate is medium to full bodied, with fine, firm tannin, bright acidity and a long, savoury finish typical of the appellation. This is a wine to cellar or to serve with good food. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant for an hour. It is at its best with rare beef, roast lamb and game.
