Blason de l’Evangile is the second label of Château l’Evangile in Pomerol, a Merlot-led Right Bank Bordeaux from the 18th-century estate. Aged in oak, it shows cherry, raspberry and a touch of blackberry over a supple, approachable frame.
Description
Blason de l'Evangile is the younger sibling of Château l'Evangile, an esteemed Pomerol estate founded by the Léglise family in 1741 in the southeast of the appellation. It is a classic Right Bank Bordeaux led by Merlot with Cabernet Franc. Pomerol sits on a plateau of gravel over deep blue clay and iron-rich subsoil, the famous crasse de fer, which gives the wine its rounded mid-palate weight and savoury, earthy depth while keeping the Merlot supple rather than heavy. The fruit ferments and then ages in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the staves softens the tannins and folds in a measured spice and vanilla without masking the fruit. Malolactic fermentation rounds the acidity into a smoother, fuller texture. In the glass it is deep ruby, with fresh red fruit of cherry and raspberry, a hint of blackberry, and a gentle earthy, cedary edge from the oak and clay soils. The palate is succulent and accessible, with fine tannins and a clean, fruit-led finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted for half an hour, in a Bordeaux glass. Good with roast beef, duck and mushroom dishes.
