Description
Château l'Evangile is a red from AOC Pomerol in Bordeaux, an estate established in the mid-18th century and run since 1990 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, the Lafite owners. The wine blends Merlot with Cabernet Franc and is farmed under respectful agriculture. Pomerol's plateau is defined by clay-rich soils over iron-bearing gravel, the famous crasse de fer, which suits Merlot and gives the wines their depth, roundness and fine tannin. The clay holds water through the warm season and feeds slow, even ripening, building flesh and concentration, while the Cabernet Franc adds aromatic lift and structure. Eighteen months in oak frame the fruit with spice and rounded tannin through gentle oxygen exchange across the barrel. The wine is deep ruby, with a nose of ripe plum and dark cherry over tobacco, cedar and a savoury earthiness. The palate is full and supple, with concentrated dark fruit, fine tannin and a long, savoury finish that reflects the Pomerol clay. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant ahead. It suits roast beef, duck and game.
