Description
Château Léoville Las Cases sits in Saint-Julien on the left bank of Bordeaux, one of the appellation's leading estates. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc and Merlot, grown on the deep gravel terraces near the Gironde. These gravel soils drain freely and store daytime heat, ripening Cabernet fully while the river moderates temperature swings, and the estate farms sustainably. The wine is aged eighteen months in French oak barriques of 225 litres, with a share of new wood. During this time the porous oak allows slow oxygen exchange that fixes colour and softens the tannins, while the wood contributes cedar, spice and a fine grained structure. The colour is a deep, dense red. The nose shows dark cherry, blackcurrant and plum, with tobacco, cocoa and cedar from the barrel. The palate is full bodied and firmly structured, with substantial but well integrated tannin, fresh acidity and a long finish carrying leather and black pepper. This is a wine built to age. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted well ahead, with roast beef, lamb or mature hard cheese.
