Description
Chateau Leoville Barton is a classified Second Growth in Saint-Julien, run for generations by the Barton family, whose roots trace back to the Bordeaux wine trade. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot. Saint-Julien sits between Margaux and Pauillac in the Medoc and is valued for balance, combining the structure of its neighbours with a more rounded, supple texture. The vineyards lie on deep gravel banks that drain freely, store warmth and drive the vines deep, the basis of this even, dependable style. The maritime climate of the Gironde gives a long, steady ripening. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds cedar and spice. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows ripe plum, blackcurrant and red cherry, with cedar, tobacco and an earthy, savoury edge. The palate is medium to full, finely structured and elegant, with smooth tannins and a long finish that rewards cellaring. Decant an hour ahead and serve at 17 to 18 degrees in a large glass. It is a classic partner for lamb and beef.
