Château Le Pin is the Thienpont family’s two hectare Pomerol estate on the Gironde right bank. This Merlot led red, with Cabernet Franc, spends 18 months in French oak and shows red and black fruit, floral and herbaceous notes over an earthy base.
Description
Château Le Pin sits on a two hectare plot near Catusseau on the right bank of the Gironde, owned by the Belgian Thienpont family since 1979 and named after the lone pine beside the cellar. The blend is mainly Merlot with Cabernet Franc. Pomerol's soils combine clay with iron rich gravel, which holds water through dry spells and feeds the concentration and dark fruit that mark the wine, while the maritime climate keeps acidity in line. The clay subsoil suits early ripening Merlot, giving roundness and depth, with Cabernet Franc adding structure and a savoury edge. Ageing runs 18 months in 225 litre French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and folds in spice and a fine grain. The 2015 is concentrated, with a nose of red and black fruit jam, floral and herbaceous notes and exotic spice over an earthy background. The palate is dense and layered, the tannins firm but polished, the finish long. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant an hour ahead. It suits roast beef, lamb and game.
