Description
Chateau Lascombes is a historic Margaux estate dating to the seventeenth century, with 120 hectares across the appellation and more in the Haut-Medoc. Its strength is the variety of its soils, mixing clay, limestone and stony gravel, which lets the team plant each grape where it ripens best. Gravel mounds drain freely and warm easily, ripening Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and cassis, while cooler clay holds water for the fleshier Merlot, and a little Petit Verdot adds colour and spice. The result is the perfumed, finely tannic style for which Margaux is known. The wine is aged around 14 months in French oak, where slow oxygen exchange polishes the tannin and adds cedar and a cocoa edge without burying the fruit. It is deep ruby with a nose of dark cherry, plum and redcurrant over tobacco, cedar and dried herbs. The palate is medium to full and elegant, with fine-grained tannin, freshness and a long savoury finish that rewards a few years in the cellar. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant an hour or two ahead. It suits roast lamb, beef and game.
