Château La Tour Figeac is an organic Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé, a Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend on the gravel and clay soils near Figeac. Fifteen months in barrel give it plum, dark berries and liquorice over a fine, savoury structure.
Description
Château La Tour Figeac is a Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Émilion on the right bank of Bordeaux, an estate officially founded in 1879 and farmed organically. The wine is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the classic right-bank pairing, grown on the gravel and clay soils near the Figeac plateau where warmer, well-drained gravels ripen the Merlot fully while the cooler clay holds freshness in the Cabernet Franc. Fermentation is followed by fifteen months in barrel, where slow oxygen exchange through the oak softens and integrates the tannin and adds a savoury, cedar-and-spice frame to the fruit. The colour is a deep ruby. The nose shows plum and dark berries with liquorice, tobacco and a hint of oak over an earthy base. The palate is medium to full bodied at 13 percent, with fine-grained tannin, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish that reflects the right-bank style. Serve at 17 degrees, decanted an hour ahead, in a large Bordeaux glass. It suits roast red meats and game.
