Description
Château Haut Brion produces this white in AOC Pessac-Léognan, from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Founded in 1525 by Jean de Pontac, Haut Brion is the oldest of the five estates classified as Bordeaux first growths in 1855 and the only one outside the Médoc, owned by the Dillon family since 1935. Pessac-Léognan sits on deep gravel over clay and limestone, free-draining soils that store warmth and drive full ripeness while a slightly warmer, urban-influenced setting protects the vines. The wine is fermented and aged in French oak barrels for twelve months, barrel fermentation binding the oak into the wine rather than layering it on top, adding a toasty, smoky depth and a creamy weight from lees contact, while Sémillon lends body and honeyed richness and Sauvignon Blanc keeps the drive and citrus lift. This is a white built for the cellar. The colour is bright gold. The nose is complex and restrained, white fruit and pear over smoke, toast and beeswax. The palate is full and structured, layered with almond and citrus peel, the oak seamless behind a long, mineral finish. At 14% it is powerful yet balanced. Serve at 12 to 14 degrees in a large glass.

A wine for fine dining, at its best with lobster, langoustine and turbot in rich sauces. It also suits roast chicken and veal in cream, and mature hard cheeses such as Comté.
