Description
Château Haut-Brion sits in Pessac, in the Graves region just outside the city of Bordeaux, the only wine outside the Médoc to be classified a Premier Cru in 1855. Its gravel terroir is the source of its character: deep beds of gravel and sand drain quickly and warm fast, ripening Cabernet Sauvignon fully and giving the wine its trademark smoky, earthy signature, often described as a warm-stone or scorched note distinct from the Médoc. The blend leans on Merlot for flesh and dark fruit, with Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and a little Cabernet Franc for lift. Barrel ageing in French oak resolves the firm young tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds cedar and a fine grain of spice, while the close-planted, mature vines keep yields low and concentration high. The wine is restrained in youth and unfolds slowly in the glass. The nose shows dark plum and wild berry, then smoke, pencil shaving, tobacco and liquorice. The palate is full and savoury, the tannins firm and finely textured, with the earthy, mineral depth carrying a long finish. This is a wine for the cellar. Serve at 17 degrees and decant well ahead, with beef or lamb.
