Description
Chateau Grand Corbin-Despagne lies in the north of Saint-Emilion, on the right bank of the Gironde, and has been farmed by the Despagne family since 1812, with Francois Despagne the seventh generation at its head. The 2025 is a Grand Cru blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Corbin sector sits on sandy and clay soils over a base of iron rich subsoil known locally as crasse de fer, which gives the wines their depth and a distinctive savoury character, while the clay holds moisture to keep Merlot fresh through the summer. The estate is farmed with respect for the soil and certified for its environmental approach. After fermentation the wine ages in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange rounds the tannins and adds spice and polish. In the glass it shows a bright garnet red, with a nose of ripe red fruits, cherry and plum over earth, tobacco and fine oak. The palate is elegant and fluid, with supple tannin, fresh acidity and a long, refined finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted ahead. It is a fine partner for roast meats.
