Description
Château Figeac stands on the western edge of Saint-Émilion, on the border with Pomerol, farmed by the Manoncourt family since 1892. The estate is set apart by its gravel mounds, rare in a region dominated by limestone and clay, and by a blend that gives unusual weight to Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot. The gravel drains freely and holds warmth, which is why these later-ripening Cabernets reach full maturity here, lending the wine aromatic lift, structure and a graphite edge that pure Merlot blends rarely show. The estate farms with respect for the land. Ageing runs to twenty-two months in French oak barrels, where gentle oxygen exchange through the wood knits the tannins together and adds cedar, fine spice and a savoury complexity. The colour is bright ruby. The nose opens with red currant, plum and cherry, then tobacco leaf, pencil shaving and a touch of earth. The palate is structured and elegant, the Cabernet Franc bringing freshness and the tannins fine and persistent through a long finish. This rewards cellaring. Serve at 17 degrees and decant ahead, with beef, lamb or game.
