A six year cane honey rum from Ron Aldea on the Canary Islands at 43%, bottled by Chateau du Breuil, with sweet vanilla, caramel and orange peel over young oak spice and black pepper, approachable but a touch sharp.
Description
Rum Explorer Canaries pairs Canary Islands producer Ron Aldea with French bottler Chateau du Breuil, a column distilled rum built on sugar cane honey and carrying six years of age. The nose is sweet and fruity, with vanilla, caramel and a clear orange peel note, lifted by a faint alcoholic edge.
Matured in ex bourbon wood and bottled at 43%, with added sugar unstated, the palate turns more assertive, spicy and citrus led with young wood, orange and black pepper, finishing on candied fruit, orange peel and burnt sugar with a dry edge. The slightly higher strength gives it more grip than standard forty percent bottlings, though it shows some alcohol bite and a shorter finish. It is best taken as a casual sipper or in mixed drinks. Drinkers who enjoy sweeter, citrus driven column still rums and want a touch more assertiveness will find it fits.
